Mom-to-Mom Tips for a Great Session

I’ve learned that the best family photos happen when everyone forgets the camera is there. As a mom, I know dads sometimes feel out of place in front of the lens. Little ones can get shy when all eyes turn their way. And over time, I’ve discovered that the most genuine moments come from gentle encouragement instead of rigid directions.

One of my favorite approaches is to offer suggestions rather than strict instructions. I might invite your family to share a quiet story together, then step back and let you guys take the lead. A simple nudge, like asking dad to lean in and whisper something sweet, often results in the most authentic smiles. Things like dancing around mom/dad gets kids relaxed and also gets the wiggles out!

I also love when clients want to bring along a small keepsake. It could be a beloved blanket or a few blooms from your garden. Having something familiar in hand helps toddlers settle in. It also gives parents an easy way to interact without worrying about posing, as long as you let me know if you want the item in frame or not! During our time together, I keep the conversation flowing. I’ll comment on your child’s giggle or notice how your outfits catch the light. These casual observations help everyone relax. Before you know it, you’re talking and laughing as if we were old friends!

By the end of the session, it feels more like catching up over coffee than standing still for photographs. That’s where the magic happens…in the moments when your family is being themselves. If you’re looking for an easygoing session that feels more like hanging out than posing, I’d love to welcome your family in front of my lens. Let’s create photos that feel just like you.
